THROWDOWN: Street Photography

I’m excitedly awaiting a little Pentax mirrorless, with the prime lens, to arrive in the mail. My main purpose for buying this camera, besides the general convenience of its smallness, is to take the plunge into some serious street photography. I’m always out and about doing this and that, and see people doing stuff all day that I would love to capture.

So…I would love to see your street photography.

Nice start Richard @camerasinger! I always find street photography a little confusing. It’s quite a broad area of photography, open to so many different interpretations.
These are a couple of my favourites of late, I think they’ve been on here before but oh well. Thanks for starting the throwdown Rachel @rachaeltowne.

I like what Wikipedia has to say about Street Photography:
“Street photography is a genre of photography that features subjects in candid situations within public places and does not necessitate the presence of a street or even the urban environment. ‘Street’ simply refers to a place where human activity can be seen, a place to observe and capture social interaction. The subject can even be absent of any people and can be that of object or environment where an object projects a human character or an environment is decidedly human.”

This is probably my favourite genre of photography and I would do it every day, all the time, if I had the opportunity and time. I love taking pictures of people in public. I’ll share a few here later, for your excellent THROWDOWN, @rachaeltowne …and can’t wait to see what you do with that new lens. 🙂

Street Photography for me is such a difficult subject as I feel so concious with pointing a camera at folk and although I have done some I’ve never been happy with the results. I think for me I would feel better doing it if I was in a group of photographers !!

I love this genre as well. The problem for me is I live in a very small town. When I walk down the street with a camera, all eyes are on me, which makes me a tad uncomfortable. However, when I am in a crowded place, I am much more at ease. The last time I photographed on the street was on a cold December day.

I recently bought a new camera also to work on street photography, a Leica D-Lux 6. It’s a little point and shoot with which I use as a prime because the zoom mechanism is quite slow. It’s goes as wide as f/1.4 which is quite exciting. I haven’t taken many shots with it yet, but you can see a few here.

I think it’s so much easier to take street shots when you’re away from your own town/city/village, photo’s like these give us the viewer a real feeling for the place…

My first choice would have been a Leica but I sadly didn’t have the funds for it. The Pentax Q looks like a similar camera but I paid more like $300 for it. I love the idea of a tiny camera with interchangeable lenses and manual control.

First shot was an easy one the guy couldn’t see you looking down on him, the second shot is good except I wish the young lad had worn a different colour tee shirt and the third one is ‘scary’ and you’re just showing off with which camera you have!! – now back to the dungeon asap! 🙂

Well, the Pentax got here yesterday, but it won’t turn on! According to the manual the flashing light on the battery charger means that it’s a bum battery. Grrrr…

Now, I’m waiting for a damn replacement battery to arrive in the mail. That’s what I get for buying a used camera I guess. It’s a beautiful camera that has been cared for and arrived nicely packaged in the original box. So, I’m hoping that a new battery will indeed solve the issue. If not, then I have to send it back and start over.

First world problem, but annoying anyway.

@rachaeltowne Wow, Rachael, a little pentax mirrorless… that sounds exciting indeed! Did you receive it already? I would be interested to hear what your experiences are with it. I’m very happy with my Pentax K10 D , and don’t go anywhere without it if I can somehow help it… but a small one to take along when the big one is too impractical… OMG, that surely is on my wish list too – it probably will stay there for a long time still, LOL !

Hi @steppeland! Welcome to the family…
It is possible to embed pictures on the forum that you have hosted on the lightstalking site.
There are two easy options:
1) Above the reply box there is the toolbar and if you select the far right icon that will give you the option to upload a new image that will also embed it in the reply.

Or 2) If you have already uploaded an image to a lightstalking album then you can use ‘SHARE TO FORUM’ option, this can be copy/pasted in to your reply.

I tend to host everything on Flickr and then get HTML codes from the site to insert in to here, but that’s mainly because I had that account before I joined here.
There used to be a guide on how to do all this, but I wasn’t able to find it. Any idea where it is Rob @admin? Give us a shout if you don’t have any luck, someone will know!

@thepaparazzo Hi, Mike! Thank you for that explanation – I guessed the should be ways to do it, but didn’t get to figuring it out yet, but the above is very helpful. I can try out both ways, since I have a Flickr account too, and it will be a good thing to have uploading there back into my routine as well.

I find it’s pretty easy now to just upload directly from my computer…the site re-sizes and it generally doesn’t take long per photo.

@steppeland Yes, I have it now and it’s awesome! For it’s smallish sensor, the picture quality is really good. I have the prime lens, which is very fast and pretty sharp.

I carry it everywhere now and I am definitely taking a lot more photos. The few street shots I’ve worked up the nerve to take didn’t turn out so well since the subject suddenly walked away, but I’m taking it to the Farmer’s Market tomorrow which tends to be colorful and bustling. I hope to get wet my chops a bit more with snapping random people. Wish me bravery!

Here are a few shots taken with the Pentax Q from the last week or so. I got some great ones of a few kids at my daugher’s preschool (I work in the classroom sometimes) but I won’t share them here even though I really want to!

@rachaeltowne Aww, Rachael, those are great shots indeed. Is the girl on the first pic your own daughter? such a cute kid! And that bathing doll… that’s just too cute! Great in BW too…
Yes, you must be careful when putting pics on the internet, isn’t it – esp. when taken in private settings like a classroom, and without written permission of the parents… But I hope you will be able to share them with the parents themselves, I’m sure they will love to see their kids on the pic – and maybe you could ask their permission to put the pics on your site… ?

Anyway, as for street photography, yes, I know, it takes a lot of nerve – esp. in the beginning – to make pics of strangers… but it does become pretty addictive too, once you got the taste of it, LOL. I feel most comfortable when using an personally adapted version of the ‘hip-shot technique’ – which I got introduced to at deviantART by StamatisGR , a great street photographer himself! He describes his way of working with hip-shot technique in a dA journal here

You can actually see how I do it in one of the early street pics I made (2009) :

It’s not such a great street shot, but a double candid shot, since I wasn’t aware at all that I was making my self portrait as a street photographer (Note the reflection in the door window at the opposite side of the street 😉 )

A similar shot, where I was very aware that I was including myself in the window reflection, I made recently here:
Again, it’s not the best shot I have of this man-with-the-pipe , but does illustrate best my ‘hip-shot technique’

Anyway, whatever technique you use, main thing is to really blend in, try and feel comfortable and relaxed, even if you are not, and approach your subject unnoticed… Then make your shot and move on. When they see you’re taking their picture, just give them a big smile – usually, people don’t mind, but in case they object, I always tell them I will remove their image, and do so while they are with me. – I don’t think it’s worth a fight.
Since a few years, I also carry some business cards with me with my email address and the websites I use to upload my work to – and If people ask about it, I offer to send them a copy of their pic. That usually settles the issue…
So good luck on the Farmer’s Market! That indeed is a great setting to practice Street! And don’t forget: blend in, feel comfortable (as if you have been doing this all your life), and smile 😀 !

I’ve learnt to love street photography. Not having access to wide rolling vistas, majestic mountains or crystal blue waters you tend to take the opportunities where they are available. For me the most available photographic subject is the streets and people of central London so over the last 6-9 months I’ve taken regular excursions during my lunch break and snapped candid shots of a wide variety of folk.

I’ve been so fearful about taking photos of people against their will, but I’ve been in fear conquering mode lately and it was time. The guy with the bird on his shoulder noticed me and smiled for the camera.

I caught this shot today… I’m a huge fan of these light patches that carve through the surrounding darkness. Last minute camera grab as the guy walked perfectly through the light beam.

But the weird thing is I don’t like it. I really don’t like it. Something doesn’t seem right. Any suggestions? I don’t think one of my own photos has ever bugged me this much before.

A change of angle has eased my frustration a little.

I don’t know, Mike, @thepaparazzo, I really like the first one. The second one seems to highlight the windows more than the subject. Either way, the shadows are terrific in both!

I definitely like the second one better, like you, Mike. I think the first one might be cropped or framed too tight. I would like to see a little more of where the man is going…he seems too close to the edge of the picture for me. In the second one you offer this space. Not sure if that rings true for you or what you wanted to achieve but it’s a cool location and maybe you can go back and catch this light again for some more shots from different angles.

I agree. I think it’s the fact he’s extremely close to the edge of frame. I never usually place anything that close but noticed recently that I can play it a bit too safe sometimes… I have to admit that it has gown on my a little since I posted it.

Thanks Karen @karamen. You’re right about the second shot, it was a nightmare trying to crop it down. I even cloned some reflections out of a couple of them to lessen the distractions from the girl, but guess it didn’t work.

I’m really enjoying all the street photos, my street is a couple of kilometers of dirt road surrounded by paddocks and trees with us being the only human inhabitants……so not a lot of activity happening there!

@thepaparazzo love the ‘Paris massage and spa’ photo, beautiful light and so sharp, to me it almost gives it a painting or old poster look. The Christmas tree shot to me looks to portray the other side of christmas where not everyone is surrounded by family and friends, it gives a bit of a lonley vibe to me.
You really have the knack of creating a mood for what could be seen as mundane scene to others.

@rachaeltowne great photos I likethe black and white it seems to emphasize the personalities more. I’ve always been a bit wary of taking peoples photos too, maybeI just need to get into town more!

@thepaparazzo I’ve had good luck on the sharpness at night sometimes too… I think with a stationary object and focus on a bright light source like that…no problem!

Wonderful street shots, @ed-aldridge …I love the first one. That’s something that I often do – take pictures of other people’s photo subjects…there’s just something compelling about that and I often get the photographer in the photo too. I love the happy smiles on those people….tells a nice story. Also love the one of the woman bent over a phone or tablet on a bench. You can tell I love candid people shots like that. And black and white works so well for these. 🙂

It’s funny you should mention that…it happens so often with me…I take a whole series of photos of some scene and when I look back at them at home, I find that the very first one is my favourite. Do I just think I should keep shooting to get a better/improved shot, instead of trusting what I saw first? And…I also often get a great shot just as I’m about to quit shooting. I wonder if others experience that too. 🙂

Candid but I think she was aware of what I was doing, I’d been there for a while taking pictures of the fountain so I think she was comfortable with me

I only posted it late last night Ed… Yes I just use Lightroom. To cheap to buy plugins and too lazy to use photoshop! It’s a cracking bit of software though. What do you use?

Lightroom as well for me, it does everything I need plus my PC at the moment can’t handle editing large files so GIMP and Photoshop are mostly out.

One technique I picked up from a magazine which creates a sort of HDR look is to move the highlights bar all the way to the left, the shadows all the way to the right then play around with the contrast and clarity sliders, I’ve used this on a few night shots and it looks pretty good, try it on that shot and see what you think..
